Navigating Australia’s skilled migration pathway can be complex and daunting. One of the most critical steps in this process is undergoing a skills assessment. For some of the visa types, it can be the entire foundation upon which your application rests.

What Visas Require a Skills Assessments
There are three groups of visas requiring a skills assessment.

General Skilled Migration (GSM)
Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189). This is a permanent residency visa for high-skilled workers. It allows them to live and work anywhere in Australia without employer or state sponsorship. A positive skills assessment for an applicant’s occupation is mandatory, and a points test, with a minimum score of 65 is required, although a higher score increases your chances of invitation.
Skilled Independent visa (subclass 190). Similar to a 189 subclass, this is a permanent residency for skilled workers who have been nominated by an Australian state or territory. A relevant points-tested skills assessment is required to be considered.
Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491). A 5-year visa for skilled workers to live, work and study in designated regional areas of Australia. It requires state or territory nomination or family sponsorship.
Employer Sponsored
Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186). A permanent residency visa for skilled workers that have been nominated by an Australian employer. Applicants must be under the age of 45, have at least 3 years work experience and undergo a skills assessment.
Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 482), or the Skills in Demand (SID) visa. It is a temporary visa for Australian employers to hire overseas workers to fill a labour shortage. While generally skills assessment is not required, certain passport holders under certain occupations may trigger mandatory skills assessment.
Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 494). This is a 5 year temporary visa allowing Australian employers in designated regional areas to sponsor skilled overseas workers to fill shortages.
Temporary Graduate
Temporary Graduate (subclass 485). This visa is a temporary visa allowing international students to live, work and study full time after completing a CRICOS-registered course. This visa is usually for 18 months to 5 years.

Why Do You Need a Skills Assessment?
A skills assessment is an important requirement for many Australian skilled visa pathways. Its purpose is to confirm that an applicant has the qualifications, employment background, and practical skills necessary to perform the nominated occupation to the standard expected in Australia.
For certain visa subclasses, a positive skills assessment is a mandatory pre-lodgement requirement. In other words, the visa application cannot proceed unless the applicant has first obtained an assessment confirming that their skills are suitable for the occupation being nominated. This helps ensure that applicants have the level of competency and experience required to work effectively in the Australian labour market.
A skills assessment is not simply a review of how many years a person has worked. Even where an applicant meets a minimum experience threshold, the relevant assessing authority must still be satisfied that the applicant’s skills are comparable to Australian standards.
Each occupation is allocated to a designated assessing authority, and each authority has its own criteria, documentary requirements, processing times, and fees. Depending on the occupation, the assessment may involve a review of qualifications, employment evidence, licensing or registration requirements, and in some cases practical or technical assessments.
There are limited exemptions in certain circumstances. For example, some Subclass 482 visa applicants may be exempt from a formal skills assessment where they fall within a high-income category or meet other specific criteria. However, exemptions are narrow and should always be assessed carefully against the relevant visa requirements.
Ultimately, a skills assessment plays a critical role in demonstrating that an applicant is genuinely qualified to undertake the nominated role in Australia and satisfies an essential legal requirement for many skilled migration applications.
What Documentation do you need?
A successful Australian skills assessment needs certified documents and high quality scans of your current passport and birth certificate. You will need detailed academic transcripts, a copy of your resume and proof of English proficiency.
Here is a more detailed list of the documentation you will require:
- Proof of Identity. A high quality scan of your passport biography page which clearly shows your name and your photo. You will need two more official documents, such as your birth certificate, a driver’s licence or similar. You will need a passport-style photo of yourself taken within 6 months and, if you’ve changed your name from your birth name, you need documentation that shows this official name change.
- Qualifications and Education. You will need certificates to show your degree or diploma, your highest level of education. Along with this you need to provide official academic transcripts showing subjects studied, results and completion dates. And then any syllabus details for non-accredited or overseas qualifications.
- Employment Experience. This documentation is vital for points in your assessment. You will need detailed employer references and testimonials printed on company letterhead. This must outline your responsibilities and dates of employment. If you have any employer contracts, copies of these must be provided. Also, you will need evidence of you being paid by your employer, such as payslips, bank statements and taxation documentation. Finally, you will need your resume showing your work history.
- English proficiency. Applicants will need a test report from IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT or OET.
The documentation that you submit must be high quality colour scans and submitted in pdf format. They must all be in English, so if your documentation is not in English it must be translated.
Some of your documentation will need to be notarised to prove authenticity, and file size should not exceed 10mb per document.
Always refer to the specific requirements of the relevant Assessing Authority (e.g., ANMAC for nurses, TRA for trades) for your specific occupation, such as ACECQA for childcare.
