National Innovation Visa Subclass 858: A Complete Guide for 2025

The National Innovation Visa 858 is a permanent visa for world-class talent in Australia. Align Law helps applicants with clear, expert guidance on every step.

National Innovation Visa Subclass 858

The National Innovation Visa (Subclass 858) is a permanent visa pathway for individuals with internationally recognised records of exceptional and outstanding achievement. As of 7 December 2024, this visa replaced the Global Talent Visa and continues to focus on attracting world‑leading talent to Australia. Align Law offers expert guidance on all aspects of this visa.

What Is the National Innovation Visa (Subclass 858)

The NIV is intended for established and emerging leaders in professions, sport, the arts, academia, research, entrepreneurship, or other innovation‑related fields. Applicants must demonstrate exceptional and outstanding achievements, continuing prominence in their field, and the capacity to make substantial contributions to Australian innovation, productivity, and competitiveness. These requirements are clearly outlined by the Department of Home Affairs.

Key Eligibility Requirements

Here are the primary eligibility criteria you must satisfy:

  • Internationally recognised achievements: You must have achievements that are acknowledged on a global level, such as international awards, major publications, patents, or leadership in large‑scale projects. Continued prominence is required.
  • Nominator requirement: You must be nominated by an Australian individual or organisation with national reputation in your field, using Form 1000 – Nomination for National Innovation visa.
  • Expression of Interest: Submit an EOI showing your achievements. You face a 60 day window to lodge the visa application if you receive an invitation.
  • Age considerations: There is no strict age cap, but applicants under 18 or over 55 must show exceptional benefit to Australia.
  • English language: Requirement is Functional English. If you do not meet this, additional charges may apply.
  • Health & character checks are mandatory.

Priority Sectors & Visa Priorities

The Department of Home Affairs has clearly defined priority levels that will influence which EOIs are invited first. Being in one of these priority categories can substantially improve your chances.

Priority Levels:

  1. Candidates with top of field international awards from any sector.
  2. Candidates nominated by a Commonwealth, State or Territory Government agency under Form 1000.
  3. Candidates in Tier One sectors with exceptional achievements:
    • Critical Technologies
    • Health Industries
    • Renewables & Low Emission Technologies
  4. Candidates in Tier Two sectors with exceptional achievement:
    • Agri‑food & AgTech
    • Defence Capabilities & Space
    • Education
    • Financial Services & FinTech
    • Infrastructure & Transport
  5. All other applicants meeting eligibility.

Application Process: Steps & Practical Advice

Here is how to prepare and apply, including additional tips to maximise success:

  1. Self assessment: Check your achievements and field, ensure you meet the “exceptional and outstanding” standard.
  2. Secure a credible nominator: Use Form 1000; nominator should have national reputation.
  3. Prepare your evidence: Documentation of achievements, awards, publications, leadership roles, etc. Everything should be verifiable and recent.
  4. Submit Expression of Interest (EOI) via Department’s Immi Account. Ensure all documentation is clear, translated where necessary.
  5. Wait for invitation: If your EOI is selected based on priority sectors and strength of evidence.
  6. Lodge visa application within 60 days after invitation. Double check all forms, health and character clearances.
